Favorite song to play in the car?
You have unlimited money for one week - what do you do?
Okay, probably take an amazing trip to Europe or Asia (or both lol). I’m so tight on cash currently that I can barely imagine what I would do with money. I would treat myself to some delicious food, and tickets to the ballet (probably Paris Opera Ballet). I have a friend who dances with the POB and it would be amazing to see her perform in Paris.
Best summer day you can remember? What made it so good?
My family and I had this 8 day backpacking trip in the Cascade Mountains and it rained the entire time. We were literally in our tent for 6 days straight and on our second to last day the sun came out and just created heaven on earth. We had a campsite in a secluded valley with a waterfall and pools going up the side of the valley. We went swimming and explored and ate dinner outside of our tent. It was absolutely sublime, and I will never forget it.
Favorite place to get a donut?
To be honest I don’t go out of my way to get donuts. I’ve had Krispie Kreme donuts and Dunkin Donuts... I think. I’m embarrassed to say I don’t think I’ve had any other ones. But stop by Nancy Kappelman’s house (my mom lol) and she makes the best homemade donuts on this planet. It's the best of both worlds; they are scrumptious and free!
What's your all-time favorite Disney movie? why?
Mulan for sure. The characters are on point, Mushu slays me. Plus I just love that she's an empowered female lead!
What was the hardest you laughed recently?
Yeesh, I don’t know! I laugh so much all the time. My girlfriend, Mariya, can make me laugh until my stomach hurts pretty much everyday. I also was talking to my parents the other day on the phone and I was laughing constantly. I think the people I love the most make me happy enough to laugh until I’m crying.
Do you have a favorite book? If so, what is it and why do you like it?
Favorite questions are so hard for me! I think one of the books that really impacted me most was Invisible Man which was assigned to me during senior year of high school. And because I am long winded and can never pick just one, I also adored The Kite Runner, a truly beautiful book. And I wouldn’t be a Kappelman without speaking of my love of Harry Potter… I think I cried while reading every book in the series.
Opinion on amusement parks?
I used to be pretty uninspired by amusement parks. My parents took my sister and I to Disney World when we were in elementary school and it fell flat. While I don’t like crowds and wish amusement parks weren’t so busy, I do love them now! Living in California I try to go to Disneyland when I can and I have come to love all the rides there. But count me out for the absolutely terrifying rides... Six Flags... No thank you!!
Do you have an impressive gymnastics move you can do?
I did gymnastics when I was young and have done some acro yoga as well. I can do headstands and can do the splits while being upside-down. Currently I’m learning to do some contortion work too!
What was your first job?
Vashon Thriftway, bagging groceries would have to be my first official job. You know... getting a W-2 and all that jazz. But I did teach ballet for Blue Heron Dance Company before that, and I don’t think I can forget to mention that I spent a huge portion of my life babysitting for families on Vashon Island (where I grew up).
