Catherine Willett

Best gift you've ever received?

My partner is from Norway & Germany. When we first started dating, he went on vacation to his family’s cabin in the Norwegian mountains. He brought back a handcrafted silver plate that he found on a shelf in the back of a cabinet. It is likely hundreds of years old and perfect in its hand-formed irregularities - created before things were mass-produced and plastic, something that could never be replaced or bought in a store. It’s the most meaningful gift I’ve received because it spoke volumes about how well he really knew me after a short amount of time, even better than people who have known me for ages.

Can you do any sports?

I can do no sports. But I have kind of good aim and I used to be a swimmer. Yoga and biking are my physical activities of choice.

Where was the last place you traveled? What did you like about it?

I went to said cabin in Norway in August, traveled around Northern Norway and down to Oslo and the fjords. We visited Berlin after - a city I’ve been to in the past and could see myself living in. Scandinavia appeals to me in so many ways, the people there place value on design, nature, simplicity, finding inner quiet, and spending time with the people you love. Berlin is a great place to party and has a harshness I can appreciate as a New Yorker. I’m a Gemini, so I thrive on vacations that embody some kind of duality, and this trip did just that. The architecture combined with my emotional reactions to each place inspired my recent series Places I’ve Been where I created imagined physical spaces that reflected psychological states of being. I also visited Mexico City last spring and fell completely in love for much different reasons. The food, vibrancy, colors, and history were all so wonderful.

What are you watching right now on Netflix?

Stranger Things Season 2, of course! Also have been slowly re-working my way through the original Twin Peaks.

Where's the best place to get brunch in your neighborhood?

Saraghina in Bed-Stuy.

Do you have any pets?

I have a 9 year old orange cat named Edgar. When I adopted him as a kitten, his name was Ogre because he was so mean to all of the potential foster parents. I’ve never been much of a cat person, but we found each other and understand each other on a deep level.

When you wake up in the morning, what's the first thing you think about?

Why does my cat hate me so much? Why does he wake me up one hour before my alarm goes off every. damn. day.

If you had to choose between cake and pie, which would you choose?

Pie. It’s understated and pretty reliable.

Favorite emoji? Why?

I’m really happy about the new hedgehog emoji that came with the new iOS update. It describes my feelings most of the time.

What's a hobby you have that most people don't know about?

I studied classical piano for 15 years but I’m really shy about it. I still have many pieces memorized, but very few people have ever heard me play.
